Fiona Hayes has been Curator of Social History since 1998. She is responsible for the collections related to Glasgow’s social and local history with emphasis on the period from the late eighteenth century to the present. Her remit covers Glasgow domestic and personal live, working live, popular cultures, politics, protest and popular movements, civic history, images of people and places and women’s history. Fiona joined Glasgow Museums in 1990 as Assistant Keeper of Outreach as part of the team that set up the Open Museum; Glasgow Museums’ community outreach programme.
She is a graduate of the University of Edinburgh and holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Museum Studies (specialising in social and industrial history) from the University of Leicester. She is an Associate of the Museums Association and member of the Social History Curators Group.
Recently she was Glasgow Museums curatorial contact for the temporary exhibition Linda McCartney Retrospective at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, 2019-20, and part of a multi-agency community focused project Banner Tales, which explored Glasgow Museums labour history banners within community settings.
