Born in the area of Greater Manchester, Laurence Stephen Lowry became one of the most popular British painters of the 20th century. He studied art during evening classes while working as a clerk and continued to work full-time until he retired in 1952, by which time his reputation was already widespread. During his lifetime he exhibited widely in Britain and also abroad in group exhibitions. He was elected RA in 1955 and his work is represented in many publis collections.
Today, his paintings are still greatly loved by a huge public who instantly recognize his mill scenes and cityscapes of the industrial north which are full of life. However, this popular image is only one aspect of his art – less familiar are his portraits, self-portraits, images of cripples and social outcasts and his strange ‘empty’ landscapes and seascapes.
