Educated at the High School and Glasgow University, Mann studied art under Carolus-Duran in Paris. He received an honourable mention in the Salon in 1885. He was a regular exhibitor at the RA from 1884 until 1907, also contributed to the exhibitions of The Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, and of whose council he was a member for some years.
