Neil Johnson-Symington joined Glasgow Museums in 2005 and is Curator for Transport and Technology, responsible for Cars, Emergency Vehicles, Motorcycles, and Bicycles.
Neil gained his undergraduate degree from the University of Edinburgh and his postgraduate degree from Goldsmiths College, University of London. He has worked widely in the arts curating exhibitions for the National Maritime Museum, Design Museum, Pittenweem Arts Festival, Summerlee Museum, and The Lighthouse Centre for Architecture, Design and the City.
Additional research interests include in twentieth-century literature, fine art, and cinema. Story displays he has developed at the Riverside Museum cover many subjects, including Scottish Paralympic and Olympic Athletes, Dazzle Camouflage, Telegram Delivery, School Crossing Patrols, Green Technology, and Stanley Spencer’s Shipbuilding on the Clyde. Neil has been involved in the Burrell Renaissance Project and developed several displays which explore the work by domestic staff at Hutton Castle.
In 2004 he wrote and published ‘Cinema City’, a booklet on Glasgow’s relationship with film, and was later commissioned to write on the subject for Glasgow City Marketing Bureau. Other written work has appeared in Museums Etc, History Scotland, Museums Journal, Stages the journal of the Liverpool Biennial and World Film Locations: Glasgow and The Big Picture Magazine.- Collections
