The Liverpool Printing and Stationery Company Ltd began as stationer's shop in Liverpool, opened by George McCorquodale in 1841. Five years later he opened the first McCorquodale printing works at Newton le Willows in Lancashire, which specialised in providing services to the growing railway network. McCorquodale's continued to expand, with new factories opening in London and Glasgow in the 1870's. In 1878, a registered envelope factory was opened in the railway town of Wolverton in Buckinghamshire. It was an immediate success. The works grew rapidly and diversified into printing books, forms and commercial stationery. By 1886, McCorquodale's of Wolverton had established a reputation as one of the finest printing factories in the country. Over time, new buildings were erected, and the works reorganised and rearranged. Government contracts were obtained for postal stamps, stationery, postal orders, old age pension, and widows and orphans forms. The Wolverton Printing Works continues in business today, using modern computer and digital technology.
