Description

Hornby was founded by Frank Hornby in 1901, when he applied for, and was granted, a patent for his invention he called ‘Improvements in Toy or Educational Devices for Children and Young People’. He put the invention into production under the name ‘Mechanics Made Easy’, which led to the establishment of Meccano Ltd in 1907. Due to the success of the company, Frank Hornby had to regularly move his factory to new and larger premises. Meccano was to become one of the classic toys of all time. Production continued during the WWI and Hornby introduced toy trains in 1920. Meccano is now manufactured in France and China. Currently sold 'Erector' sets are actually Meccano sets manufactured by Meccano S.N. of France, part of the Nikko Group of Japan.
