Millet received his first instruction in art from Langlois, at Cherbourg, and obtained a grant from the Municipal Council to enable him to continue his studies in Paris. He entered the studio of Delaroche, where fellow pupils included Diaz and Rousseau. He first exhibited at the Salon in 1840.
Upon his return to Normandy he devoted his talent to portrait painting, and later settled in Barbizon. He restricted himself to the delineations of peasant life. He was awarded the First-class Medal at the Great Exhibition in 1867.
