Description

Dr Yupin Chung curates the East Asian collections, encompassing Chinese, Japanese and Korean art including ceramics, jades, bronzes, furniture, textiles, paintings and prints from 4000 BC to the present. She has curated the major exhibition China through the Lens of John Thomson 1868–72, Glasgow, 2011, devoted to the images of China taken by the Scottish photographer and traveller John Thomson.

Dr Chung is also an Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the School of Culture and Creative Arts, University of Glasgow. She holds a PhD in Museum Studies from the University of Leicester and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Art History, University of Glasgow. In 2009 she completed a three-year research project with Professor Nick Pearce and staff of the National Museums Liverpool. This project to catalogue the Chinese works of art at the Lady Lever Art Gallery in Port Sunlight was funded by the Leverhulme Trust.

Her research is centred on the interaction of art and economics, with a particular interest in the influence of Western collectors and dealers in the Chinese art market and museum collections. She is now beginning a new project to catalogue the Yuan and Ming dynasty Chinese ceramics within the Burrell Collection.
