Description

Siva Prasad Marar is one of the foremost exponents of painting and sculpture in the contemporary art world of Northeast India. Marar is one of the foremost artists from the tea tribe community of Assam. Originally from Madhya Pradesh in Central India, the tea tribes were relocated in the 19th century by the British to work as indentured labourers on the tea plantations. They brought their own distinctive culture with them which has been assimilated with that of Assam. However, although Marar's family has been in Assam for three generations he is still not regarded as being indigenous Assamese and his works speaks of a search for cultural and political identity. Many of his paintings and sculptures (metal, resin and wood) are based on the tea plant and there is a very strong feminine component to his work. Marar was born in 1972 in the village called Geruabari in Biswanath Chariali. A trained sculptor, Marar did his Bachelor in Fine Arts from the Government College of Art and Crafts, Assam, followed by a Masters at Indira Kala Sangeet University, Khairagarh, in Chattisgarh. He also holds a certificate degree in museum and mass education from Indira Kala Sangeet University.
