Miss Martin was a dressmaker established at Aliwal Villa, Bellshill Road, Uddingston, in about 1890. The business was listed in the Post Office Directory for Glasgow from 1891 to 1897. Advertisements placed in the Motherwell Times from 28 March 1891 and continuing through to 22 December 1894 stated that Miss Martin was the sole agent for the Anglo-Parisian System of Dress-Cutting, Making and Draping for Hamilton, Motherwell, Bothwell and Uddingston. As well as making dresses using this system Miss Martin taught lessons leading to certification at Aliwal Villa and at the Mining Institute, Hamilton. It is likely that Miss Martin was taught the system by the patentee, Mrs Hanmer Cooke of London, who first advertised lectures on her system in The Glasgow Herald on 18 January 1887 and was teaching 'lessons in cutting till perfect' for £1 1s in 1890, or by one of her Glasgow agents: Miss Fulton in Dennistoun, Madame Grohé in Pollokshields, or Miss Middleton in Partick.
