Madame Veitch was established by Harriet and her husband, Robert, Veitch in 1878, possibly in Carlisle, and was first listed in the Post Office Directory for Glasgow in 1882 as a milliner and mantle maker at 257 Sauchiehall Street, advertising for workers in the Glasgow Herald, including one on 18 October 1882 for mantle makers and another for a 'good practical milliner […] able to assist in sales' on 14 February 1884. From 1885 the Post Office Directory listed the business as either a 'modiste' or 'costumier'. An ad in the Glasgow Herald on 10 September 1889 invited 'inspection of her show rooms, replete with the most recherché novelties in dresses, mantles, and millinery. In 1910 the Post Office Directory lists the business as a furrier and costumier with Robert's son, Cecil Herbert Veitch, recorded in the Census for 1911 alongside his father as a furrier and costumier. In 1925 Harriet and Robert dissolved their partnership and retired, with Cecil taking over the business. By 1949 it had become a limited company. Madame Veitch Limited was dissolved in 1974.
