Description

Phillip was popularly known as 'Phillip of Spain'. In 1837 he became a student at the RA in London, then returned to Aberdeen in 1840 where he remained until 1846. He was employed principally in portrait painting and subsequently settled in London. His early pictures were, for the most part, illustrative of Scottish domestic life. In 1851 he visited Spain, where he resided for some time in Seville. The result of this visit was the production of a series of pictures of Spanish life. In addition to his Spanish pictures, in 1860, by Royal command, Phillip painted the portrait-picture 'The Marriage of the Princess Royal with the Crown Prince of Germany'. In 1863 he produced the 'House of Commons'. He was elected ARA in 1857, RA in 1859.
