Name

John Junior Glassford

Brief Biography

1762-1777, Scottish

Description

John Glassford junior was born in September 1762 and was the sixth child of the seven John Glassford of Douglaston and Anne Nisbet of Dean had together. He had four full sisters (Anne, Catherine, Christian and Rebecca), one full brother (Henry), one half sister from John Glassford’s first marriage (Jean/Joan), and two half-sisters from John Glassford’s third marriage (Isabella and Euphemia), together with one more half-brother from this last marriage (James). John Glassford junior may be represented in the family portrait (2887) as one of the boys beside the seated Lady Margaret Mackenzie. If he was painted in the 1760s, prior to Anne Nisbet’s death in 1766, he would have been no more than four years old – possibly the child playing with the dog?
He lived until late 1776 and his death was recorded in the Scots Magazine for 01.01.1777. The report added that he was then 15 years old. He would have been raised in Whitehill House from 1762 to 1767, and then Shawfield House in Glasgow and Douglaston House in Dunbartonshire.
