Description

Ann, known as Annie, Smith was the wearer of items in Glasgow Museums' dress collection. Ann was born on 4 July 1848, the daughter of Alexander Smith, an engineer, and his wife, Margaret Peacock, in Paisley, and was baptised at Paisley High Church on 16 July. In 1851 the Census records the Alexander, Margaret and their children, Mary, Margaret, Ann and Marion, plus one house servant, living on Wilson Street, Paisley. Ten years later Alexander was recorded as a master engineer employing 130 men and six boys. He and his expanded family with the addition of Elizabeth, Agnes, Wilhelmina, Alexander and Robina Jane, and their two servants were living at 22 Abbotsford, Govan. Ann married Robert Kirk Simpson, the son of Robert Simpson of R Simpson & Sons, drapery warehouse, and his wife, Eliza Craig, at 2 Parkgrove, Paisley Road on 3 September 1868. Three years later the couple with their daughter, Margaret, and four servants were living at Muirpark, Renfrew. The Census for 1881 records Robert and Annie visiting London, where they stayed at the Imperial Hotel, Holburn Viaduct. By 1886 the family were living at 3 Hughenden Terrace, Glasgow, where their growing family of Robert Maynard, Alexander Leonard, Frederick Gordon, Annie, George Selden, Elizabeth, Dorothy and Sholto were raised. Annie's husband, Robert, died on 14 November 1908, leaving an estate worth £21,532 0s 8d. Annie died, aged 80, on 26 January 1929 at Overdale Busby.
