Description

Born 1841 in Eaton Socon, Bedfordshire, England. Daughter of Thomas Burt (1806 – 1875) and Mary Ann Burt (nee Spencer) (1811 – 82). She was a self-taught artist, who exhibited her miniature paintings with the Royal Academy between 1872 & 1883. After marrying artist William Simpson (1823 – 1899) in 1881, in 1884, her daughter Penelope Ann Simpson (1884 – 1971) was born. In 1911, Ann and Maria emigrated to New Zealand, after Ann’s marriage to Walter Hubert Hewitt.
