Watercolour self portrait by artist. A young man with hair at ear length. Pencil and watercolour. Mounted on board with cut out frame. Signed and dated (Jany. 1846). This portrait was made when Simpson was 23 years old, working in Glasgow as an apprentice lithographer at Allan & Ferguson. He completed his apprenticeship after 7 years, and continued to work there for a further 4 years, before moving to London.
