Description

Watercolour depiction of two men. One in the uniform of the 2nd Bengali Cavalry and the other in the uniform of the 13th Bengali Lancers. No date, no signature. This sketch is likely to have been made during a ceremony that took place in the aftermath of the Anglo-Egyptian War to recognise the contributions of Indian regiments in that conflict. Ahmed 'Urabi or Orabi Pasha, was an Egyptian military officer who became a social and political leader in Egypt and led an uprising against the rule of Tewfik Pasha and the Khedivate of Egypt between 1879 - 1882. Following the uprising, the United Kingdom invaded Egypt, establishing British influence over the country that continued until 1954. The 13th Bengali Lancers was raised in 1846, and it participated in a number of conflicts, including the Anglo-Persian War, the Second Afghan War, as well as World War 1. The 2nd Bengal Cavalry has its origins in 1809, as 'Gardner's Horse'.
