The renowned Meyrick Collection was formed by Sir Samuel R Meyrick, a lawyer and antiquary, of Goodrich Court, Herefordshire. The collection was chiefly composed of arms and armour, upon which Sir Samuel was a leading authority, and of medieval works of art. He bequeathed his collection to his cousin, then Captain AWH Meyrick; much of the collection was exhibited in the South Kensington Museum (now the V&A) between 1866–71. Part of the collection was sold in 1871 and in 1878 Major-General AWH Meyrick presented many of the remaining objects to the British Museum.
