Other Arthropods

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 51,000 arthropod specimens. These date from the late 19th century to the present. This collection consists mainly of chelicerates – around 50,000 spiders, scorpions, harvestmen, mites, ticks and pseudoscorpions (Arachnida) conserved in spirit, plus a further 40 dried specimens, 10 dried horseshoe crabs (Merostomata) and approximately 30 sea-spiders (Pycnogonida) in spirit. The collection also contains crustaceans – roughly 500 samples of dried seed shrimps (Ostracoda), 50 dried barnacles (Cirripedia), 100 dried lobsters, crabs and shrimps (Malacostraca) and about 800 other specimens in spirit, mainly malacostracans but also including a few marine and terrestrial woodlice (Isopoda). In addition, the collection has Myriapod specimens – around 200 British centipedes and millipedes in spirit, plus some foreign specimens. The collection covers virtually all Scottish arachnid and crustacean families, and also represents a few tropical and temperate species from around the world. The main chelicerate collections are those of EA Crowson and JB Gray. Important crustacean specimens were collected by David Robertson and Alexander Patience, including type material.
