- Description
-
Trained by his father, Crawhall also studied under Aime Morot in Paris. He was gifted with decorative power, which was enhanced by his ability in application of flat washes over excellent designs. Always dissatisfied with his work, he destroyed a great many drawings so that examples of his art are comparatively rare. His subjects included animal life in all its phases, especially horses, dogs and fowl and he would spend hours watching their movements which afterwards he would paint almost entirely from memory. Was prominently identified with the Glasgow School of painters. Crawhall was awarded the gold medal in Munich, and the silver medal in Paris.
