Description

Born Hilaire Germain Edgar de Gas on July 19th 1834 in Paris to a banking family, Edgar wanted to become a painter from an early age, and was later to study under the French classicist Ingres. Around 1865 he began to be associated with the new Impressionist movement, and exhibited at several of their exhibitions. His cool, precise, yet evocative style has endeared him to many ardent followers. However, he was not keen on working outdoors as the impressionists were, but preferred the studio. Degas loved the theatre, which is evident from the warmth and drama he injects into this subject. Yet perhaps the most popular of his paintings are those of the ballet.
