The American War in 1860–65 temporarily wrecked the calico-printing industry, he thereupon devoted himself entirely to landscape painting, choosing for his subjects principally the scenery of the Scottish Highlands. Docharty was elected ARSA, 1876. He died whilst travelling and sketching in Egypt.
