Description

Docharty was the son of a calico blockcutter, and worked as a pattern designer. He studied at The Glasgow School of Art, and employed his leisure in painting and sketching from nature. The American War in 1860–65 temporarily wrecked the calico-printing industry, he thereupon devoted himself entirely to landscape painting, choosing for his subjects principally the scenery of the Scottish Highlands. Docharty was elected ARSA, 1876. He died whilst travelling and sketching in Egypt.
