Description

Son of a goldsmith, Durer first learned his father's craft, and later became pupil of a Nuremberg painter, Michel Wolgemut. He applied himself equally to the study of painting and engraving. He engraved a large number of plates, etched a few, and designed many important woodcuts. He was the author of several treatises on mensuration, fortification, and proportion.
