This plate depicts an episode from a Chinese play 'The Romance of the Western Chamber' written by Wang Shifu (about 1250-1300). The scene shows a first meeting of Zhang Sheng and Cui Yingying in the Monastery garden. He is enchanted by the sight of Cui Yingying. The style of decoration with a colour scheme known as 'famille verte' was extremely popular in Europe.
