This plate depicts an episode from a Chinese play 'The Romance of the Western Chamber' written by Wang Shifu (about 1250-1300). Here, Yingying’s maid, Hong Niang, is seen asking Dharma Source the abbot of the Monastery when the memorial service for her mistress’ dead father will be performed. Zhang Sheng, standing beside the abbot, takes this opportunity to question the maid about Yingying. The style of decoration in underglaze blue was extremely popular in Europe.
