This plate depicts an episode from a Chinese play 'The Romance of the Western Chamber' written by Wang Shifu (about 1250-1300). Here Zhang Sheng accompanied by Dharma Wit, a disciple of the abbot, has seen Yingying in the Monastery garden for the first time. Zhang Sheng has expressed a wish to look around the Monastery but as he and the monk are about to enter the Hall of the Buddha, he can gaze at Yingying. The style of decoration in underglaze blue was extremely popular in Europe.
