This plate depicts an episode from a Chinese play 'The Romance of the Western Chamber' written by Wang Shifu (about 1250-1300). Here, Zhang Sheng meets Dharma Source, the abbot of the Monastery and ask the abbot if he can rent a room. His excuse is that he would like study with the abbot, but in reality, he wishes to be close to Yingying. The abbot agrees to Zhang Sheng staying in the Monastery and he takes up residence in the Western Chamber – the title of the drama. The style of decoration in underglaze blue was extremely popular in Europe.
