This dish depicts an episode from a Chinese play 'The Romance of the Western Chamber' written by Wang Shifu (about 1250-1300). When widow Cui discovers that her daughter and Zhang Sheng have been meeting in secret, she proposals him her daughter’s hand in marriage on condition that he travels to the capital and passes the government examinations. Here, Zheng Sheng, is seen departing the Monastery following a banquet in Ten Mile Pavilion. The willow tree in the background symbolises the sadness of the occasion. The style of decoration with a colour scheme known as 'famille verte' was extremely popular in Europe.
