Description

The earliest Chinese ceramics in the Burrell Collection are painted pots associated with the Neolithic Yangshao culture. It is best known for its pottery, and the makers created fine white, red, and black painted pottery with geometric designs. The drawing on the jar shows an early example of two tones of reddish-brown brushwork for artistic compositions. The physical lightness of the jar comes partly from the hand-building skills of the potters but also from the kind of silty, lime-containing clays typical of the rich, yellow, dust–like soil from Northwest China.
