Description

Leslie Hunter moved to California with his parents at the age of 13, where he became a magazine illustrator. Returning to Glasgow in 1910 he took up painting more seriously and was championed by Alexander Reid and by Dr T J Honeyman, the art critic who was later to become Director of Glasgow Museums and Art Galleries. He spent much of his working life in France, and was influenced by Cézanne and Matisse, particularly in his strong use of joyous colour. He persuaded McInnes to buy Matisse’s The pink tablecloth which was later bequeathed to this gallery, Hunter’s work consists mostly of still life and landscapes of France and Scotland, particularly Loch Lomond and Fife. With Honeyman’s encouragement he ventured into the field of portraiture in the twenties.
