Description

Son of a lawyer, he entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1849, and was a pupil of Couture for six years. He copied works of Venetian and Spanish Schools in the Louvre. Visited Spain in 1865 and was interested in Goya and the works of Velasquez. Through influence of Berthe Morisot and other Impressionists, he adopted their lighter colourings and the habit of working out of doors. He painted landscapes as well as his usual portraits, genre scenes and nudes. In his last years when illness restricted his movements he often used pastel for portraits and nudes.
