Brief Biography

circa 1485/95-1559/60, Italian

Occupation

Artist

Description

The brother of Titian (qv), Francesco was also his occasional assistant, but there is doubt as to which of the two was the elder. Apparently little in demand in Venice itself, at least for public commissions, Francesco was active above all as a painter of altarpieces for the Italian mainland, especially for the regions of Belluno and his native Cadore. His style remained based on Titian’s work of the second decade of the sixteenth century.
