Name

Leopold Hirsch

Brief Biography

1857 - 1932 German

Occupation

Financier; Art collector

Description

Born to parents Baruch and Nina Hirsch in Hoppenheim Germany, Leopold left Germany to work as a broker for Sir Julius Charles Wernher. Wernher, a fellow German national, was one of England's richest men at the time of his death. A great collector of art, Wernher was no doubt an influence on Hirsch's own collecting.

Said to have arrived in London with no more than £5 to his name, Hirsch died in 1932 having accumulated a fortune as a successful financier and amassed an internationally significant art collection.

Hirsch died at his home in Kensington Palace Gardens, and was buried at the Jewish Cemetery at Willesden, London.

His collection was dispersed through Christie's auction house in 1934.
