Glasgow Museums has an extensive and internationally significant collection of art and design. It comprises over 60,000 objects from all parts of the world, which date from about 1100 to the present.
This collection encompasses paintings, drawings, photography and prints, sculpture, new media, and video and installation art. It also contains metalwork, ceramics, glass and stained glass, jewellery, furniture, furnishings and interiors, and dress and textiles. Many of the major artists and movements of Western art are represented, and the collection also holds art from ancient civilizations and world cultures. The European art collection includes paintings of the Italian Renaissance, fine sculptures, and tapestries and stained glass from medieval northern Europe. It is strong in Dutch, Flemish and Spanish paintings, and has notable works by Hague School artists, French Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, and British artists including the Pre-Raphaelites. The decorative arts and design collections cover the Arts and Crafts Movement, the Celtic Revival, Art Nouveau, and the Glasgow Style including the work of the renowned Scottish architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The significant collection of European dress and textiles contains a wide range of items – from Renaissance embroideries to modern sportswear.
Scottish artists and movements are well represented in both the collection of Scottish art – which includes works by the Glasgow Boys and the Scottish Colourists – and in the contemporary art collection. This reflects a continuing interest in Scottish art and active purchasing of works by some of the country’s leading artists.
