Glasgow Museums has a growing collection of international artworks from 1945 to the present. 

 A number of works within this International holdings were acquired for the Gallery of Modern Art opening in 1996 and are associated with Outsider Art *and World Cultures art**, these date from 1971 to 1990. Artist included Paddy Japalijarri Sims, Robert Campbell Jr, Hong Song-Dam, and Mathia Kauge. The collection also holds works by international arts such as Andy Warhol, Niki de Saint-Phalle, and Sebastian Salgado A significant number works were collected through the Art Fund International*** collecting scheme (2007 - 12) which saw 17 artist and over 30 artworks come into the collection. This included artist such as, Thomas Demand, Fischli & Weiss, Jenny Holzer, Roni Horn, Emily Jacir, Barbara Kruger, Fiona Tan and Wolfgang Tillmans. Though conversations during Art Fund International, Glasgow Museums commissioned with the help of Art Fund, a public artwork by Lawrence Weiner in 2015, with his text work being carved in steps around GoMA.

 Glasgow Museums continues to collect international work that has influenced or gives context to the artist we have in the collection, as well as the wider cultural story of the city. These works can be historic or contemporary works. Such artist we have brought in to the collection are Hal Fisher, Hito Steyerl, Sharon Hayes and Walter Price. * Outsider Art is term used to describe artists who are either not specifically trained to defined standards, or who are not from the same racial, cultural or social background as those who become professionally empowered to define art within a society.

 ** World Cultures art refers to contemporary art made in non-Western countries, such as art by indigenous people of Australia or Papua New Guinea. This category also includes art from Russia and Korea. Some of the world cultures collection can also be considered Outsider Art.
 ***Art Fund International: Art Fund International was a £5 million funding initiative launched by the Art Fund in 2007 in order to encourage UK museums and galleries to build outstanding collections of international contemporary art.
