European Metalwork

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 1600 items of European metalwork. These date from 1100 to the present. This collection comprises base and precious metals from Europe and England. It contains pewter, Sheffield plate, electroplate objects and sporting and regimental trophies. The collection also includes domestic, regimental, presentation and ecclesiastical silver. The Burrell Collection boasts rare Limoges enamel work from the 12th to 13th century. It also holds examples of European pewter, both ecclesiastical and domestic, and English domestic base metals such as brass and bronze. Later base-metal objects from the 18th to 20th century reflect the main technical developments in manufacturing. They include tankards, mugs, plates, teapots, tea services, jugs, salvers, communion plates and church collection plates. The collection also has fine examples of English plate representing George Wilkes, John Langlands, Paul Storr, John Jackson, Anthony Nelme and Paul de Lamerie. There is a strong collection of presentation trophies that encompasses a large collection bequeathed by Sir Thomas Lipton.
