Glasgow Museums has an extensive European decorative arts and design collection. It comprises some 10,500 objects, which date broadly from 1100 to the present. This collection contains a wide range of materials, including ceramics, glass, jewellery, textiles, metalwork and furniture. It encompasses Sir William Burrell’s internationally significant medieval collections, which contain some of the finest stained-glass panels and tapestries in the world. There is a substantial collection of ceramics from various periods, including prestigious Renaissance pottery, English and European porcelain, and earthenware and studio wares by renowned potters. The glass collection is of predominantly English and Dutch origin, but includes especially strong groups of work from Spain and Venice. The furniture and interiors collection holds objects that range from antique chests to 20th century plastic, and represents internationally famous individuals, studios and companies associated with Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts Movement.
