English Landscapes to 1960

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of over 250 works dating from between 1700 and 1950 which were made by British artists and/or depict the British landscape. This collection includes oil paintings, watercolours, and drawings, nearly all of which depict English or Welsh locations, with only a small number showing foreign locations by English or Welsh artists. These works also include paintings and drawings of English and Welsh landscapes and topographical views or marines by artists of other nationalities. Both Constable and Turner, the two greatest masters of English landscape painting, are represented by fine works including 'Modern Italy – the Pifferari' and 'Hampstead Heath', respectively. The earliest works in the collection are marine subjects by Monamy, Brooking and Cleveley. These head a small group of about 20 marine subjects including important artists such as Hemy, Moore, Brett, Stanfield, Creswick, Olsson and Wadsworth. A notable part of this collection is a group by some of the best pioneering 19th century English watercolourists which includes work by Callow, Cotman, Cox, Foster, Rowbotham, Sandby, Varley and de Wint. Paintings from the 20th century include work by Fry, Stanley and Gilbert Spencer, Winifred Nicholson, Piper, Duncan Grant, Hitchens, Hodgkins, Hillier, Nash, Sutherland and Lowry. Other significant works include Patrick Nasmyth's view of 'Windsor Castle' of 1830, BW Leader's 'A Golden Eve' and Whistler's nocturne of the River Thames.
