Glasgow Museums has a collection of 191 Dutch paintings dating from between 1600 and 1730 which together form one of the largest and finest such groups in the UK. This collection includes Dutch works produced during the so-called 'Golden Age' of Dutch painting and represents many of the greatest artists of the period including Rembrandt, Nicolaes Berchem, Gerard de Lairesse and Jacob van Ruisdael, among others. There is also a broad range of categories represented such as portraits, landscapes, seascapes, still lifes, church interiors, religious subjects, 'everyday' scenes and figure studies. Dutch painting in this collection is broadly defined to encompass those works made in the Republic of the Seven United Provinces (the 'Dutch Republic'); a territory in the Low Countries of north-west Europe that effectively broke from Habsburg (Spanish) rule in 1581, although not officially recognized until 1648.
