European Banners and Hangings

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 350 banners and hangings which broadly date from AD 1575 to the present. This collection contains examples of both public and private banners and hangings. A large part of the collection is comprised of Trade Union and other political banners made for parades and demonstrations, the majority of which were made and used in Glasgow. Decorative banners include the large 'Keeping Glasgow in Stitches' banners made in 1990 to celebrate Glasgow's year as European City of Culture. Hangings range from tailors' mosaic or inlay hangings from the mid-19th century and artist-weavers' hangings from the 20th century to domestic wall and bed hangings dating from the 16th century. The latter include wonderful embroidered hangings in the Burrell Collection, such as the Lochleven hangings and crewelwork pieces from the 17th century.
