Other Scottish Etchers 1880-1930

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 500 etchings from the time of the Etching Revival, roughly 1885–1930. This collection mostly consists of work of a topographical nature, and features views of Scotland, France and Italy. It represents several artists of the period, including RW Allan, Robert Bryden, James Cadzow, Susan Crawford, Willaim Hole, ES Lumsden, JH Mackenzie, WD Macleod, Tom Maxwell, Charles Murray and William Renison. The Etching Revival saw a return to the ‘old master print’, reviving techniques used by Rembrandt and inspired by the great 18th century printmaker Giovanni Battista Piranesi. During the 1920s there was a great demand for etchings, and many etchers developed expertise in the medium to satisfy this. At this time Glasgow dealers were at the forefront of the etching trade.
