Turner Prize winners and nominees

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a number of works by artists who have won or been nominated for the Turner Prize. The Turner prize is arguably the best known and most prestigious visual arts prize in the UK, and respected around the world. The Turner Prize was started in 1984 and is awarded to a British artist. The prize states that a ‘British’ artist means an artist working primarily in Britain or an artist born in Britain working globally. Hamilton Finlay was the first Scottish artist to have been nominated in 1985. Glasgow artists, born or based here, have had an acceptingly high inclusion in the nominations for the Turner Prize. As such there is a strong connection to Glasgow School of Art, the city and its collection. The Turner Prize was hosted in Glasgow, at Tramway in 2015. Glasgow Museums has collected many of the Scottish affiliated artists who have been nominated or won the Turner Prize such as Charlotte Prodger, Christine Borland, Douglas Gordon, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Jim Lambie, Karla Black, Martin Boyce, Nathan Coley, Simon Starling. The collection also holds other nominees and winners not affiliated with Scotland such as; Elizabeth Price, Grayson Perry, Phil Collins and Wolfgang Tilmans.
