Glasgow Museums has an impressive collection of Scottish art. It comprises some 7,750 objects dating from 1600 to 1960. This collection encompasses paintings, drawings, sculpture, stained glass and prints, and represents many of Scotland’s most significant artists. It boasts a fine selection of portraits, landscapes and Victorian narrative and history paintings. These are by significant Scottish artists including Allan Ramsay, Henry Raeburn, William ‘Crimean’ Simpson, David Wilkie, Muirhead Bone, Joan Eardley, Anne Redpath, William George Gillies and James Cowie. The collection holds work by most of the 25 artists associated with the Glasgow Boys group, including Joseph Crawhall, James Guthrie, John Lavery, EA Walton, George Henry and EA Hornel. In addition, it has fine examples by the Scottish Colourists Samuel John Peploe, John Duncan Fergusson, Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell and George Leslie Hunter. Many of the best Scottish etchers of the period 1880–1930 are represented, including ‘The Big Four’ – Muirhead Bone, David Young Cameron, James McBey and William Strang. The collection also holds lithographic topographical illustrations and engravings and mezzotints after other masters.
