Scottish Drawing and Painting to 1960

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 3,500 Scottish drawings and paintings. These date from 1600 to 1960. This collection comprises about 1,500 paintings and 2,000 watercolours and drawings. The works are by important Scottish artists of the period, including Ramsay, Raeburn, Nasmyth, Knox, McCulloch, ‘Crimean’ Simpson, Wilkie, the Faed brothers, Pettie, Orchardson, Paton, McTaggart, Pringle, Muirhead Bone, Colquhoun, MacBryde, Eardley, Redpath, Gillies and Cowie. Among the significant areas of the collection are an excellent group of 18th and 19th century portraits, definitive collections of 18th and 19th century landscapes, and Scottish Victorian narrative and history paintings. Scottish artists of the period 1940–60, many of whom studied at Glasgow School of Art or Edinburgh College of Art, are also well represented. Some areas of the collection are primarily of historical interest, including many 19th and 20th century portraits of local dignitaries, such as the Lord Provosts of Glasgow, and topographical views of the city.
