Modern and Contemporary British Art

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of British artworks that date from 1945 to the present. This collection comprises sculptures, paintings, moving image, installations and works on paper by artists from across the United Kingdom, with a focus on works from by artists who were born, trained or lived and worked in Scotland. It includes notable works by David Hockney, Bridget Riley, Anthony Caro, Alan Davie, Maud Sulter, Andy Goldsworthy, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Eduardo Paolozzi, Douglas Gordon, James Rigler, Barby Asante and Aaron Angell. A strength of the collection is the 20th century photography, which encompasses work by many important figures such as Joseph Mackenzie, George Rodger, Thomas Joshua Cooper and Nick Danziger. The collection also holds works by the British artist Peter Kennard and photographs by Jo Spence. Alan Dimmick, Nick Danzinger and Nick Waplington are also represented by some excellent examples of their social documentary photography. The collection also has a growing moving image collection with works by Barby Asante, Roderick Buchanan, Charlotte Prodger and Phil Collins. Recent acquisitions include paintings by Conrad Atkinson, Rabiya Choudhry and Victoria Morton and important works made to mark the WWI centenary by John Akomfrah and Christine Borland. As we are based in Scotland there is a focus on work made by artists who were born, have trained, lived and worked here.
