Modern and Contemporary Scottish Art

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of Scottish artworks that date from 1945 to the present. This collection includes prints, paintings, sculptures, videos and installation works. It includes artists that were born, studied or live and work in Scotland. It holds examples of figurative painting in Scotland, including works by Joan Eardley, George Wylie, John Byrne, John Bellany, and Alison Watt. There are also some rare and unique works by the 1980s’ ‘New Glasgow Boys’, represented by Peter Howson, Ken Currie, Adrian Wiszniewski and Steven Campbell. Recent graduates of The Glasgow School of Art with works in the collection include Corin Sworn, Christine Borland, Roderick Buchanan, Graham Fagen, David Sherry, and Karla Black. The collection also holds sculpture and prints by Eduardo Paolozzi, Willie Rodger, Sam Ainsley, Boyle Family, Kenny Hunter and Jacki Parry, and a significant collection of photography by Joseph McKenzie, Oscar Marzaroli, Alan Dimmick, Patricia MacDonald, Maud Sulter and Thomas Joshua Cooper. Since 1996 there has been a strong focus on conceptual, moving image and installation art which is represented in the collection through the work of Douglas Gordon, Jim Lambie, Simon Starling, Charlotte Progder, Alberta Whittle, Sarah Forrest and David Shrigley. As the civic collection of Glasgow recent collecting activities have grown to reflect the changing population of the city. Citizens of Glasgow have long been known for their political activism, cultural pride, gallus or dark humour and visual arts scene. Glasgow Museums’ collections honour these qualities, while also encompassing Glasgow’s interest in internationalism, social justice and civic space. More recent collecting activity has sought to redress the gender and racial gaps in the collection, with equalities and diversity driving acquisitions and programming.
