Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 1,000 items of European glass, which date broadly from 1500 to 1960. This collection predominantly comprises English glass, mostly in the form of 18th century drinking glasses. Other large groups include Dutch, Spanish and Venetian glass. The collection of Dutch engraved drinking glasses is one of the best in the world, and features individual masterpieces and a range of techniques. The Spanish glass collection is the second largest in any UK museum and is representative of Spanish glassmaking from the 16th to 19th century. The Venetian glass contains some fine individual examples from the 16th century, and also revivalist pieces from the late 19th century. In addition, the collection holds high-quality individual items of late 19th and 20th century art glass from France (Gallé), Austria (Vienna Werkstatte), Sweden (Orrefors), Italy (Sottsass) and the USA (Tiffany).
