European Prints to 1960

Comments

Glasgow Museums has an extensive collection of some 4,750 European prints. These date broadly from 1200 to 1960. This collection comprises etchings, engravings, woodcuts, wood engravings, lithographs, linocuts and other types of print. The works originate from England, Wales, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Spain and other European countries. The collection also represents several significant historical or regional types, such as a small group of French 19th century artists connected with the Impressionists, French 18th century engravings, Dutch and Flemish 17th century etchings, English and Welsh etchers of the great revival period 1880–1930, and English and Welsh wood engravers of the 1920s and 1930s. It includes numerous fine works by some of the most notable European artists, including Dürer, Rembrandt, Rosa, Goya and Gauguin, and 100 prints by Whistler. There are also a good number of English and Welsh artists represented, including Brangwyn, Cruikshank, Sickert and Nevinson. In addition, the collection includes a small group of significant photography by Cartier Bresson and George Rodger, and a rare bound volume of Hogarth’s complete works.
