Glasgow Museums has an internationally significant collection of European art. It comprises some 8,000 objects from the period 1200 to 1960. This collection encompasses paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture and represents the finest artists and leading movements in Western art. The collection of Italian art contains works from the main artistic centres of Venice, Bologna, Rome, Florence and Naples, and includes masterpieces by Titian and Bellini. The Spanish art collection is strong in art from the late 16th and 17th century and also has works by Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali. The Dutch and Flemish collection contains masterpieces by Rembrandt and Rubens and significant works by artists of the 19th century Hague School, such as Josef Israëls and Matthijs Maris. The French collection is particularly strong in work from the 19th century. It has groups of paintings by several major artists, including Theodore Géricault, Jean François Millet, Claude Monet, Edouard Manet and Edgar Degas. There is also a good collection of early modern art, with works by André Derain, Georges Braque and Henri Matisse. The British art collection ranges in date from 1600 to 1960 and contains works by many significant artists, including JMW Turner, John Constable, William Blake, Edward Burne-Jones, Walter Sickert and LS Lowry. In total, the collection holds about 5,000 prints and there are roughly 750 examples of sculpture, which date from 1200 to 1960 and originate from France, Germany and Britain.
