The Glasgow Boys

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of over 600 works by the Glasgow Boys. These date from the period 1880–1920. This collection comprises paintings, oil sketches, works on paper, sculptures and stained glass, and reflects the most vital period of the Glasgow Boys’ activity. Most of the 25 artists associated with the group are represented, including Joseph Crawhall, David Gauld, James Guthrie, George Henry, EA Hornel, William Kennedy, John Lavery, William York Macgregor, Arthur Melville, Stuart Park, James Paterson, Alexander Roche and EA Walton. The most significant areas of the collection are an excellent group of ‘rustic realist’ pictures painted in the early 1880s by Guthrie, Paterson and Kennedy, and a group of works connected with Lavery’s 1888 picture of the state visit of Queen Victoria to the Glasgow International Exhibition. There are important Symbolist pictures by Henry and Hornel from the 1890s, and a group of paintings and watercolours inspired by their visit to Japan in 1893–94. There is also an impressive group of watercolours by Melville and Walton, and a substantial holding of the works of Crawhall.
